As a near-native of Fort Collins, Valerie grew up at the Old Town Library (then Main Library, the only library in town), lugging books home by the boxful ready to devour. As a young kid, she was perplexed about summer reading program incentives that were designed to entice kids to read, because from her perspective, who wouldn't want to read books?
Valerie brings a wealth of experience and skills to the Board of Trustees that she's gained from her long-time volunteer work and positions on governmental and nonprofit boards, committees, and taskforces. In addition to her current service with the City of Fort Collins, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Fort Collins Board of Realtors, Valerie has worked with the local Rotary Club, YMCA Colorado Youth in Government, Colorado Women's Bar Association, and the Humanex Academy among many other organizations.
Professionally, Valerie has spent much of her career as an attorney within the Colorado Attorney General's office where she dealt with matters of employment law, civil litigation, and real estate, and also within the Office of the Independent Monitor with civilian oversight for Denver's Department of Safety. In 2014, she became a licensed real estate broker and currently assists clients with buying and selling residential real estate in northern Colorado.
Valerie holds a law degree from the University of Colorado - Boulder where she also previously achieved a Master of Arts degree in Instruction and Curriculum as well as a secondary language arts teaching license.
As a Board member, she's interested in continuing to make the libraries relevant for the community and highlighting their impact.
"It has been a pleasure to watch the growth of our libraries, and I look forward to being part of the process for continued success."
